Going to a day spa shouldn’t mean that you will walk away battered and bruised, but as spas make the shift from exclusive pampering to overall wellness there is more of risk of walking away with infections, burns and in one rare and bizarre case, death. To make sure that your day spa experience isn’t a nightmarish disaster do your research well ahead of time and reassure yourself that your spa of choice is clean, safe and pain free, aside from the occasional yelp caused by a Brazilian wax.

According to an article on Forbes.com it is important to check up on a spa’s status with the public by looking at posted customer reviews and asking for a consultation in advance with the doctor or registered nurse who will be performing the treatment. Also important to ask is whether the spa you are interested in holds specific medical licenses. You don’t want to have your face pumped full of Botox by just any old Joe wielding a needle.

The main issue these days is that many women seek to improve their physical appearances by signing up for such drastic procedures as Botox, laser skin resurfacing and microdermabrasion. These treatments are not just categorized as your light and soothing European facial or rejuvenating back rub. While both sets of treatments require a professional hand, the former are more invasive and let’s face it, have more dire consequences if something goes array than just the plucking of one too many an eyebrow hair. My advice: research your spa just as if you were picking a doctor. If you are planning on engaging in one of the more daring procedures, the hands that hold the Botox have the power to either make you look like a shining celebrity or Bozo the Clown.
